Set in 1920s Bengal, this Rituparno Ghosh adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore's novel follows law student Ramesh, who loves Hemnalini but is pressed by his father into marrying a widow's daughter. When a storm wrecks the newlyweds' boat, Ramesh rescues a young woman he believes is his bride, only to later realize she is actually a stranger named Kamala, married to another man. As Ramesh tries to shield her from this truth while hiding the situation from Hem, the tangled misunderstanding forces each character to confront questions of duty, love, and social expectation.
