Set in the court of Mughal Emperor Akbar, this 1960 historical drama traces the forbidden romance between his son, Prince Salim, and a court dancer named Anarkali, a bond the emperor refuses to accept because of her lowly status. As paternal authority clashes with the prince's devotion, the disagreement escalates into open conflict between father and son. Made over many years on an unprecedented budget, the film became known for its lavish scale, classical-inspired musical score, and record-breaking theatrical success.
