Set in 1879 Calcutta during the Bengali Renaissance, this Satyajit Ray drama follows Charulata, a bright, artistically inclined woman whose husband Bhupati, absorbed in his newspaper and political interests, unintentionally leaves her isolated at home. When his younger cousin Amal arrives to help with the paper, he and Charulata form a close intellectual bond over shared literary interests, one that deepens even as complications arise involving her brother's family and her own emerging talent as a writer. The story explores the emotional distance within a marriage and the quiet stirrings of connection and creativity that develop in its place.
