36 Chowringhee Lane

Set in Calcutta after Indian independence, the story follows Violet Stoneham, an elderly Anglo-Indian schoolteacher who lives a solitary life, visiting her ailing brother and caring for her cat while her niece has moved on after marriage. A chance meeting on Christmas Day with a former student and her boyfriend leads Violet to let the young couple use her flat during the day, and an unlikely friendship develops as she finds companionship in their visits. The film traces how this relationship shifts over time as the couple's own lives change.
