Ask anyone who follows Indian cinema seriously which industry is doing the best work and the answer, for a decade now, has been Malayalam. Small budgets, ordinary people, plots that turn on a detail. The problem for an American viewer is not finding out about the films. It is finding them.
We list 219 Malayalam films on a US service and around 3,100 on an Indian one, and that gap is mostly about what we can see rather than what exists. Netflix has the famous ones and Prime Video a good many more, and those we can check for an American viewer. Two services hold much of the rest — ManoramaMAX, run by the Kerala newspaper group, and Simply South, a diaspora service for the four southern languages. Both are cheap, both publish exactly which audio tracks they carry, which is more than Netflix does, and both publish the catalogue we can read for India. Both sell abroad as well, so a film listed here may be there too; we have no way to check, and we would rather say so than let an Indian listing stand in for an American one. Where you see "Malayalam, confirmed" below, that is the platform stating the track.

Drishyam (2013). Simply South, Malayalam confirmed — an Indian listing; we have found no US service carrying it. Georgekutty, a cable TV operator, and his family become the focus of an investigation when a senior police officer's son disappears. Jeethu Joseph's thriller has been remade again and again and is still best in the original. If you watch one film on this list, watch this.
Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016). ManoramaMAX and Simply South, Malayalam confirmed — both Indian listings; no US service we can find. A studio photographer in Idukki is humiliated in a street brawl and swears not to wear footwear until he has settled the score. That is the whole plot, and it is one of the most loved films of the decade in Kerala, because everything around the plot is the point.
Minnal Murali (2021). Netflix. A small-town tailor is struck by lightning and gets powers. Basil Joseph's superhero film is what Marvel would look like if it were set in a village with one bus. Netflix produced it, so this one at least is easy to find.
Then these
Lucifer (2019). Prime Video. Kerala's chief minister dies and the party tears itself apart over the succession, with a son-in-law tied to drug money in the middle of it. Political thriller, and the reason a sequel exists. Prime lists Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu tracks, inferred rather than confirmed.
Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life (2024). Netflix. Two men fly to Saudi Arabia for work, are tricked at the airport, and one of them is taken into the desert to herd goats in isolation for years. Based on a novel based on a real man. Hard to watch, harder to forget.
Memories (2013). Prime Video. A brilliant police officer has drunk his way out of active duty after a personal tragedy when newly married men start disappearing and his old superior asks him back. The film that made Jeethu Joseph's name before Drishyam.
Bhoothakaalam (2022). YouTube TV in the US; ManoramaMAX and Simply South in India, Malayalam confirmed. A schoolteacher and her unemployed son, both grieving, both broke, start to notice things in their rented house. A horror film that is really about depression, or the other way round.
Jan.E.Man (2021). Sun NXT, Malayalam confirmed. A homesick nurse in Canada flies back to Kerala for a lavish thirtieth birthday party his school friends have arranged at a reluctant friend's house, and an elderly neighbour dies across the street the same night. Dark comedy about the tension between a party and a funeral on one road.
The newest
If you want to see what Kerala is making this year rather than last decade, ManoramaMAX has Sarvam Maya, a supernatural comedy about an atheist musician who fills in as a temple priest and performs an exorcism that works too well, and Vaazha II, a coming-of-age comedy that follows the 2024 hit. Both list Malayalam audio, confirmed, and both are Indian listings. Of the two, only Vaazha II has turned up on a US service so far — Hulu carries it. We have found nowhere in the US showing Sarvam Maya.
