Set in 1938, this drama follows an eight-year-old girl sent to live in a riverside home for widows after her husband's death, joining a group of women confined by tradition to lives of poverty and renunciation. Amid the home's harsh rules, one young widow's secret romance with a progressive, Gandhi-influenced man threatens to upend the fragile order the women's caretaker maintains. Directed by Deepa Mehta as the final part of her Elements trilogy, the story examines child marriage, widowhood, and social exclusion in rural India.
