Set in a Tamil village, this 1987 drama follows Balu Thevar, an outspoken atheist from a land-owning caste, whose son Sankarapandi falls in love with Vaidehi, the daughter of a Brahmin priest. Their relationship exposes the rigid caste divisions and hypocrisies within the community, setting off a chain of dramatic events that affect both families. Directed by Bharathiraja and based on a stage play, the film offers a pointed critique of caste prejudice and Tamil Brahminical customs.

Where to watch in USA

We checked the streaming catalogues and it isn’t on any service we cover — in any country, not just yours. Films leave and return, so this can change.

We check JioHotstar, Eros Now, Sun NXT, Prime Video, ZEE5 and 13 others. If it is streaming somewhere we don’t read, it won’t show up here — tell us and we’ll add it.
