This 1982 Marathi drama, directed by Jabbar Patel and shot simultaneously in a Hindi version, follows Sulabha Mahajan, a married woman who longs to move beyond domestic life and take on a meaningful public role. Against the wishes of her husband and mother-in-law, she takes a post running a women's shelter in a small town, where she confronts corruption, apathy from the institution's overseers, and the exploitation of the women in her care. The story, adapted from Shanta Nisal's novel 'Beghar', explores her struggle to assert her own identity while addressing the mistreatment of vulnerable women in society.
