Train to Pakistan

Hindi · 1998 · 107 min · drama

Directed by Pamela RooksNirmal Pandey

Set in the fictional border village of Mano Majra during the 1947 Partition, this Hindi drama follows a petty criminal from the Sikh community who is romantically involved with a young Muslim woman, even as Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims who once coexisted peacefully begin turning against one another. Based on Khushwant Singh's novel of the same name, the story shows how rising communal violence and the mass migration between the new nations of India and Pakistan disrupt the village's daily life. The arrival of a train carrying the dead marks a turning point that shatters the village's former calm.
