Ritwik Ghatak's 1973 Indo-Bangladeshi drama, adapted from Adwaita Mallabarman's novel, portrays life among a Bengali fishing community settled along the Titas River before independence. When a newlywed woman is seized by river raiders and later separated from her husband's village, she must raise her son largely on her own, a situation that unsettles the community's expectations around marriage and family. The story is told through several interwoven personal threads involving the villagers she encounters over the following years.
