Set in a South Indian village, this 1982 Tamil romantic drama follows Mangalam, a timid young woman, and Chella Durai, the suitor chosen for her, as their budding courtship is complicated by family pride, a dowry dispute, and misunderstandings involving her father and protective uncle. As tensions rise between the two families, Mangalam's uncle Nambiar intervenes with a bold wager to try to bring the couple together despite her father's growing resistance.
