Set during the colonial era in a South Indian village, the story follows Thangalaan, a respected tribal leader bound into labor after losing his land, who agrees to guide a British officer in search of gold hidden in nearby mountains. Their expedition into the forest is shadowed by legends of Aarathi, a feared guardian spirit tied to his family's past, forcing Thangalaan to confront both natural dangers and supernatural warnings as he pushes deeper into unknown territory. The narrative blends family history, tribal folklore, and the exploitation of native knowledge under colonial rule.
