Set in rural Bihar, the story follows Hiraman, a bullock-cart driver who swears off shady work after brushes with trouble hauling smuggled goods and bamboo. His life shifts when he's hired to ferry Hirabai, a traveling folk-theater dancer, to a distant village fair, and an unlikely bond forms between them despite their very different worlds. Their growing closeness is complicated by social judgment and a local landlord's disapproval, leading Hiraman toward a final, defining vow.
