Swades

An Indian scientist working for NASA in the United States travels back to his home country to find the elderly woman who raised him after his parents' death, eventually tracing her to a remote village in Uttar Pradesh. While there, he reconnects with a childhood friend running the village school and becomes drawn into local efforts to overcome caste divisions and promote education, especially for girls, as he confronts the poverty and social inequality faced by marginalized communities nearby.
