Set in a Brahmin household, this 1959 Bimal Roy drama follows Sujata, a girl of low-caste birth raised by an upper-caste family after being orphaned. As she grows close to Adheer, a young Brahmin man, the story traces her adoptive mother's struggle to fully accept her despite deep-seated prejudice, using the relationship to examine the social practice of untouchability in India. Directed by Bimal Roy with music by S. D. Burman, the film stars Nutan and Sunil Dutt and was later selected for the Cannes Film Festival.
