A postmaster's household fractures as conflicts between siblings and their parents escalate over money and personal choices, particularly when the eldest son demands repayment of wedding expenses and is banished from the home. The remaining family members struggle with their own marital troubles and misunderstandings while the father takes on additional work to settle the debt, ultimately requiring the family matriarch to intervene in hopes of reconciliation.
