Set in colonial-era Calcutta, the story follows Bhoothnath, an educated young man from a modest background who takes up residence in the crumbling mansion of an aristocratic family. There he becomes drawn into the troubled household of a zamindar's neglected young wife, who turns to alcohol in a desperate attempt to keep her husband, more interested in courtesans and drink, devoted to her. Alongside this, Bhoothnath forms a bond with the daughter of a local factory owner, as the film traces the decline of the family's fortunes and relationships.
