Set in a near future where robot boxing has replaced human boxing, this science fiction sports drama follows washed-up fighter Charlie Kenton, who reluctantly reconnects with his estranged 11-year-old son Max after the boy's mother dies. Struggling financially and forced to share custody temporarily, Charlie and Max discover a discarded old sparring robot named Atom, which they rebuild and train to compete in underground and professional robot fighting circuits. As Atom's surprising success grows, the pair's efforts on and off the fighting circuit also push Charlie toward repairing his broken relationship with his son.
