This 1954 Tamil drama, directed by Krishnan–Panju and based on a stage play by Tiruvarur K. Thangaraj, follows Mohanasundaram, a wealthy, Western-educated man who returns to India full of arrogance toward his own culture and disdain for those he considers beneath him. Though married to a devoted, traditional village woman, he becomes infatuated with a courtesan and gradually abandons his family, morals and fortune in pursuit of her. As his choices spiral into ruin, the story traces his descent and the toll it takes on those around him.
