Set in 1947 as Bengal is being partitioned, this Bengali period drama centers on a brothel that happens to sit exactly on the new Radcliffe border between India and East Pakistan. Its madam and her eleven women resist pressure from local Congress and Muslim League figures to abandon the house, as political maneuvering and rising communal violence close in around them. The story explores how the upheaval of Partition disrupts and endangers this small, self-contained community.
