In 1950s Calcutta, a struggling Urdu poet named Vijay finds his socially conscious writing rejected by publishers and mocked by his own family, leaving him adrift and disillusioned. His path crosses with Gulabo, a compassionate sex worker who believes in his talent, and with Meena, an old flame now married to a wealthy publisher for security. As Vijay's personal and professional fortunes take unexpected turns, the story examines art, love, and social hypocrisy in mid-century India.
