Directed by Bimal Roy, this 1953 Hindi drama follows Lalita, an orphaned girl raised by her financially struggling uncle Gurucharan, and Shekhar, the son of their wealthy neighbor who secretly cares for her. When Gurucharan's mounting debts force him to accept a loan from a kind-hearted young man named Girin, rumors spread suggesting Lalita has been given away in exchange, straining relationships between the families. The film, adapted from a classic Bengali novella, traces how this misunderstanding affects the bond between Lalita and Shekhar.
