Set in rural Bihar, this Hindi drama follows impoverished villagers who are cheated of fair wages by a powerful landlord's henchmen. When a sympathetic schoolteacher who has been helping the community's lower-caste laborers is murdered, a laborer named Naurangia abandons nonviolent resistance and takes deadly revenge against the landlord's brother. He and his pregnant wife Rama then flee their village, seeking refuge and work in the city while trying to escape the consequences of his act. Directed by Goutam Ghose and adapted from a Bengali short story, the film stars Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, and Om Puri.
