Set in Kolkata, this 1981 Bengali comedy follows Gagan Sen, a phonetics professor convinced that speech and manners dictate one's social standing, who makes a bet with his wife to transform Sabitri, a tribal-accented monkey-showwoman he meets at a book fair, into a refined, well-spoken lady. As his assistant Abalakanta helps train her in etiquette and language, complications arise around her feelings and the professor's plans for her future. Loosely inspired by Pygmalion and My Fair Lady, the film blends romance and social comedy around themes of class and self-transformation.
