Neecha Nagar is a 1946 Hindi drama directed by Chetan Anand that explores the divide between wealthy and impoverished communities living side by side in a city, told through a stylized, expressionist visual approach. Adapted from a Hindi story by Hayatullah Ansari that itself drew on Maxim Gorky's play The Lower Depths, the film marked an early move toward socially conscious, realist storytelling in Indian cinema. It also introduced actress Kamini Kaushal and composer Ravi Shankar to filmmaking.
