Satyajit Ray's 1966 Bengali drama follows a celebrated Calcutta film actor traveling by overnight train to Delhi to accept a prestigious honor, unsettled by a recent box-office failure and a public scandal. During the journey he crosses paths with a young magazine editor who sets out to interview him, and over the course of their conversations he gradually opens up about past mistakes, broken relationships, and private doubts hidden behind his public image. Woven alongside his story are glimpses of other travelers sharing the train, whose own small dramas unfold in parallel.
