Set in the village of Guptgaon, this 1984 Hindi drama follows Ramu, a boy who secretly pursues an education despite the efforts of two oppressive local rulers, Madhukar and Jaggu, to keep villagers illiterate and easily controlled. As an adult, Ramu returns to champion literacy and social reform among the villagers, drawing the ire of the men in power while navigating complicated relationships with Madhukar's daughter Laxmi and Chanda, a girl who has loved him since childhood. Directed by K. Raghavendra Rao and starring Rajesh Khanna, Jaya Prada, Sridevi and Padmini Kolhapure, the story addresses themes of education, caste, and empowerment in rural India.
