Years after leaving his son Rudhran in Varanasi for astrological reasons, a father returns to bring him home, only to discover the boy has grown into a fearsome ascetic devoted to freeing souls from rebirth. Back in Tamil Nadu, the story follows Rudhran's uneasy return to family life alongside Hamsavalli, a blind girl trapped under the control of a cruel man who exploits a group of disabled beggars. Their fates become entangled as Rudhran is drawn into confronting the abuses inflicted on Hamsavalli and the other beggars.
