Set in 16th-century Kozhikode, this Malayalam historical drama follows naval commander Kunjali Marakkar IV as Portuguese forces, allied with the rival kingdom of Kochi, seek to dominate the Malabar spice trade through oppressive licensing and military force. After a Portuguese attack kills members of his family and he is wrongly blamed for the resulting unrest, Marakkar is drawn into leading a fierce resistance against the European colonizers and their local allies. The film blends large-scale naval battle sequences with the political intrigue surrounding Kozhikode's struggle against Portuguese expansion.
