As a young boy in India, Saroo is accidentally separated from his family after falling asleep on a train that carries him far from home to Calcutta. Unable to reunite with his relatives, he is eventually adopted by an Australian couple and grows up in Tasmania. Decades later, as a young man in Melbourne, he becomes consumed with using new technology to trace his origins and locate the family he lost as a child.
