A repeat offender fresh out of prison drifts into the household of a struggling stage dancer whose father is secretly in debt to a wealthy businessman. As he becomes entangled in the family's troubles, including her sister's unplanned pregnancy, he turns to a risky heist to help them, setting off a chain of events tied to a wealthy man's search for his long-lost son. The 1943 Hindi drama was notable for its unconventional lead character and its frank handling of an unmarried pregnancy, themes rarely explored in Indian cinema at the time.
