Set in pre-independence India, the story follows a terminally ill woman who arranges for another young woman, Roop, to marry her husband, a newspaper publisher, so he won't be alone after her death. As Roop settles into this unconventional marriage, she becomes drawn into the world of a courtesan's household and forms a complicated bond with a brash blacksmith, all while rising communal tensions begin to threaten the community around them.
