Set during the 1857 uprising against British rule in India, this drama follows a Muslim Pathan landowner whose passion for pigeon-keeping contrasts with his brother-in-law's growing involvement in the rebellion. When an English family—a mother, her daughter and grandmother—flee an attack on their community, they end up sheltered first by a Hindu household and then, against their wishes, taken in by the landowner's family, where cultural tensions and an unlikely attraction develop amid the escalating conflict. The story explores questions of loyalty, tradition and shifting identity as the rebellion's fortunes turn against the Indian forces.
