Directed by Amit Maitra and Sombhu Mitra from a screenplay by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, this 1956 Hindi film follows a poor villager, played by producer-star Raj Kapoor, who arrives in the city hoping for a better life. Mistaken for a thief while simply searching for water, he spends a night fleeing through an apartment building, inadvertently uncovering the hidden misdeeds of its outwardly respectable residents. A parallel Bengali version, Ek Din Raatre, was made with much of the same cast, including Nargis Dutt and Daisy Irani.
