Four educated young men from Kolkata leave behind their routine city jobs and frustrations for a getaway in the tribal forests of Palamu, illegally settling into a forest rest house. Their retreat is complicated by encounters with local Santhal villagers and with two women vacationing nearby, whose composure and self-possession unsettle the men's assumptions about themselves and each other. Satyajit Ray's 1970 drama, adapted from Sunil Gangopadhyay's novel, examines class and personal identity as the friends' urban attitudes are tested outside their familiar environment.
