Bharat traces the life of a man from childhood to old age against the backdrop of India's history after independence, beginning with his family's separation during Partition and his promise to hold his household together. Across the following decades he works at a circus, labors abroad in Saudi Arabia, becomes a stationmaster and later a sailor, forming relationships and enduring personal losses along the way. His story is framed in the present day, as he recalls these events to a young relative while facing a decision about the family shop he has long refused to give up.
