Set in Bombay, this drama follows Anant Velankar, a conscientious sub-inspector whose commitment to honest policing repeatedly clashes with the collusion between local criminal bosses, politicians, and his own police superiors. As his attempts to act with integrity are undermined at every turn, the strain affects both his career and his romance with a college literature lecturer, Jyotsna Gokhale, while memories of his own troubled upbringing resurface. The story is adapted from a short work by S. D. Panvalkar and centers on the moral compromises forced upon an idealistic officer.
