An elderly widow from rural Bengal moves to Calcutta to live with relatives, only to discover she is being exploited as unpaid household help. She eventually finds refuge in a poor neighborhood where she connects with a group of jobless, educated youths caught in the city's escalating gang violence. Set against the backdrop of political turmoil in late-1960s West Bengal, the film follows her unlikely bonds with these young people as rival gangs clash over political agendas.
