Anari (1959) follows Raj, a struggling but honest painter who cannot even keep up with rent to his landlady. His return of a lost wallet earns him a job with the wallet's owner, a businessman named Ramnath, and he falls for a woman he believes to be a maid but who is actually Ramnath's niece in disguise. When his landlady dies after taking tainted medicine, suspicion falls on Raj and he becomes entangled in a police investigation.
