A disillusioned Mumbai cancer doctor who treats poor patients for free forms an unlikely friendship with a terminally ill patient whose upbeat, life-loving attitude contrasts sharply with his own gloom. As they grow close, the dying man's warmth and generosity draw in others around him, including a theater actor and the doctor's own romantic interest, gradually changing how the doctor sees life and loss. The story is framed as the doctor recalling this bond years later while discussing a book he wrote about his friend.
