Marking Govind Nihalani's directorial debut, this Hindi-language drama follows a poor daily-wage laborer who is persecuted by the landowners and overseers he works under. When his wife is assaulted by one of these men and he is wrongly implicated in a crime, the laborer withdraws into near-total silence, his mounting anguish conveyed largely through expression rather than words. The film, said to be inspired by a real incident reported in a newspaper, examines corruption within the legal system and the abuse of power against the poor.
