Set in a drought-prone Tamil Nadu village during the 1960s, the story follows a young graduate who takes up a temporary teaching post with a rural education organization while waiting for a government job. As he struggles to get villagers to send their children to school, he grows close to a local tea-stall owner and gradually uncovers how the community's illiterate laborers are being unfairly treated by the wealthy landlord who runs the village brick kiln.
