In K. Bhagyaraj's 1979 directorial debut, a poor tailor's eldest daughter, Saroja, falls for Murthy, a wealthy young man, while a neighboring playwright, Alagappan, silently pines for her. As economic hardship and family obligations mount, the household is pushed toward increasingly desperate choices that test each character's loyalty and moral limits.
