A young waiter and a college lecturer form a friendship that defies their conservative community's expectations and leads them to challenge a corrupt official's exploitative dowry practices. After losing their livelihoods due to social pressure and retaliation, they relocate to the city to start anew, while events back home force a reckoning with the very system they opposed.
