This 1984 Indo-Soviet drama, a joint production between Indian and Soviet filmmakers, adapts a well-known Punjabi folk legend of star-crossed love. A wealthy merchant traveling from Bukhara settles near a Punjab river town after falling for a potter's daughter, taking humble work to remain close to her despite the disapproval of her community. When her family intervenes and arranges her marriage to another man, the couple continues to meet secretly across the river, their devotion tested by the growing suspicions of those around them.
