This 1997 biographical drama follows an Austrian mountaineer who, after being imprisoned by the British during World War II, escapes to Tibet in 1944 alongside a fellow climber. The two men eventually gain acceptance in the Tibetan capital, where the protagonist becomes an instructor to the young Dalai Lama and forms a close relationship with him. Their time in the isolated nation is disrupted by China's military invasion and occupation of Tibet in 1950.
