Sanam follows Gaurav, a privileged young man overshadowed in his family's affections by his older brother Narendra, nicknamed Hero. After Narendra dies in a rescue attempt at a fairground, Gaurav enlists in the army to earn his father's respect, and while on duty he uncovers a plot by criminals to plant bombs across the country, endangering his family and his girlfriend Sanam.
