At a Delhi party, a woman named Kavita reacts to discovering her husband's infidelity by recounting a fable about another woman, Smita, whose own marriage unravels in the small town of Fursatgarh. Smita's indebted, alcoholic husband pressures her to sell family property while carrying on an affair with her cousin, who is also involved with a local policeman, and the mounting betrayals and tension lead to a fatal night that draws Smita into a murder investigation. The film gradually reveals that the storyteller and the woman in the story are connected.
