This 1961 black-and-white documentary, written, directed and narrated by Satyajit Ray, traces the life and creative work of Bengali writer and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Opening with his funeral procession, it moves back through his family lineage, childhood, education, early writing and theatrical experiments, his marriage, and his founding of a school at Santiniketan, presenting a respectful overview rather than delving into personal controversies. It was produced to mark the centenary of Tagore's birth.
