A young man from a rural village flees to the city seeking a better life but is arrested and convicted of murder by a judge. Before his execution, he asks the judge to deliver news of his death to the judge's own family, setting off a chain of events that challenges the judge's certainty in the verdict. The situation becomes further complicated when the judge later encounters a criminal who bears an uncanny resemblance to the condemned man.
